Samsung Galaxy A8 first look: A slim phone that packs in impressive features

Samsung has just released its latest A-series handset called the Galaxy A8 in the Indian market for Rs 32,500. Launched in China last month, the A8 will be the top of the line phone in Samsung’s A-series of metal frame phones. Samsung had launched the Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 earlier this year. So here are our first impressions of the slimmest Samsung handset.

Build Quality and Design

As we said earlier, the Galaxy A8 is the slimmest phone from the Korean giant. Measuring just 5.9mm, it is indeed quite slim. However it is not the slimmest smartphone around. But the metal frame and some thoughtful tapering design on the sides, not only makes the phone look elegant but also helps with the grip. There are no sharp edges that will bother you when you hold the phone in your hand.

Although the press statement says that it is a metal unibody, we noticed that the non-removable rear-cover is plastic, although the transition from metallic frame to the plastic cover is really unnoticeable. On the front, you have the 5.7-inch display with a decent screen-to-body ratio.

The base has a physical button which also houses the finger-print sensor. On the right hand side, you have a power/standby button whereas on the left hand side you have two distinct volume buttons. The top edge is clean and at the base you get the microUSB charging/data transfer port along with the 3.5mm audio jack. Overall the A8 has an elegant design and will surely attract a second glance.

Display

The Samsung Galaxy A8 comes with 5.7-inch full HD SuperAMOLED display. Thanks to the SuperAMOLED display, things are quite vibrant with a slight warm tinge. However, while using it we noticed a slight tinge of colour when you tilt the phone slightly along both the horizontal as well as vertical planes. The display has Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection.

Chipset, RAM, Storage

Samsung uses its own chipset – the Exynos 5430 – for the Galaxy A8. It has an octa-core processor with one quad-core processor cluster clocked at 1.8GHz and the other cluster clocked at 1.3GHz. This is paired with 2GB of RAM and you get 32GB of storage. One of the SIM card slots can also house a microSD card which lets you expand the storage to 128GB. In our preliminary usage, the phone came across as quite responsive. Switching between the apps, launch animations were quite smooth. However, we need to put the phone through the real world use-case scenarios to give a proper performance outlook.

OS, Connectivity

The Galaxy A8 comes with Android 5.1.1 with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI atop it. Just like the Galaxy phones we have seen recently, the A8 does not have a lot of unnecessary bloatware apart from a few proprietary apps such as Galaxy Apps, Smart Manager, WeChat and so on. On the left most home page, you have the Flipboard app.

The phone comes with a dual Nano SIM card slot on the left hand side. It can take in one 4G SIM card and one 3G SIM card. You can either have both SIM cards, or have one SIM card and use a microSD card on the other slot in case you want to increase the storage. The phone supports Wi-fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS and sensors such as fingerprint sensor, proximity sensor and so on.

Camera

It houses a 16MP rear camera with an f/1.9 aperture which is quite impressive. On the front, you have a 5MP camera. Apart from the Auto mode, you get the Pro mode, Panorama mode, Continuous shot, HDR mode and night mode. You can also download many other camera specific features such as Sports shot, sound and shot, and so on. The 5MP front camera comes with the Beauty mode and also lets you shoot using gestures. We shot a couple of indoor shots and the noise was well controlled. But we will test it outdoors and in low light conditions to get a complete idea of the camera performance. The video camera lets you shoot full HD videos.

Battery

The Samsung Galaxy A8 houses a non-removable 3,050mAh battery. Just like its siblings from the Galaxy S series, the Galaxy A8 also has an ultra-power saving mode which only gives you access to phone, messaging, internet and apps such as calculator, clock, memo and voice recorder.

Ballsy Chinese Console Rips Off Both The PS4 And Xbox One

Right now, on China’s version of Kickstarter, you can back a games console called the OUYE. If you ever wanted a console that looked like a PS4 but had a controller like the Xbox One’s, it’s for you!

Kidding, it’s garbage. It’s a hunk of copyright-infringing plastic that, judging from the games on show (and the price, seeing as you can pick one up for around $100), looks like it’s running on some modified version of Android.

We’ve seen some ballsy knock-offs coming out of China over the years, but this one’s balls are particularly brassy.

For comparison, here’s the PS4 vs the OUYE:

(note how the OUYE still manages to rip off the Xbox One here by including the top grill from Microsoft’s console).

Slightly less brazen, given the buttons in the centre in place of the Xbox “orb”, but still.

Top 5 Upcoming Smartphones 2015

An awe inspiring concept that’s achingly close to reality, Project Ara promises something revolutionary for the mobile industry. For the uninitiated, Project Ara is a fully customisable smartphone that lets users swap-out key components, otherwise known as ‘modules’ like the camera, battery or processor.

What this means is that the phone can be tailored to the user’s needs. If, say, you prioritise a bigger battery over a microSD slot, you can swap out the latter and add another battery. Or if you want to have a dual-sim phone, you can buy a dual-sim module. Ara has been years in development, and the latest Google GOOGL -0.90% I/O showed off – for the first time – an accomplished looking fully-working version. It probably won’t hit the mass market in 2015, but it’s getting a test-run in Puerto Rico later this year.

The phablet’s phablet. Samsung’s Galaxy Note series is arguably as popular as its official flagship, the Galaxy S6. Aside from the giant screen, the extras that it comes with – like a stylus and related functionality – make it popular with big-screen junkies and people who like to look important by doodling with a stylus.

Obvious improvements are likely to be an upgrade in processor to Samsung’s new all-in-one Exynos 7422 processor, which combines GPU, CPU and RAM in one chip. What that means is a faster, more efficient processor. Combine that with the typically large battery in the Note series, and you could be looking at some serious battery life.

Speaking of charging, some leaks have pointed to Samsung including a USB-C port, which means no more trying to figure out which way the plug the USB cable in. USB-C also means faster data transfer and allows a higher voltage to be pumped through it for faster charging.

There’s also likely to be an auto-ejecting Jedi-like S-pen, the same QHD display and a removable battery. With Samsung, you can be confident that there’s going to be lots of gimmicks. Some useful, some baffling. But rest assured, they’ll be there.

iPhone 6S

Apple AAPL +0.00% has a few tricks up its sleeve according to recent rumours. Most notably is a new feature called ‘force touch’, which allows users to register different actions on the handset depending on how hard they press down. For example, hard pressing on the fast-forward icon on a video could speed-up or slow-down how quickly the video skips along.

There’s also likely to be a pixel upgrade to 12MP, improving on the already excellent camera (not to mention rumours of a HTC One M8 style dual camera set up).The sapphire glass that didn’t materialise in the iPhone 6 because of production issues might also make an appearance in the 6S, and the 6 Plus might jump to a QHD resolution.

Other leaks include an improved A9 processor with 2GB of RAM and new casing to protect against bending. If even half of that is accurate, the iPhone 6S isn’t an incremental jump by any standard, but a significant improvement on the current flagship.

Moto X 2015

Not much is known about the next Moto X other than that it’s likely to feature Qualcomm QCOM +1.59%’s latest Snapdragon 810 chip and – as you’d expect – all-round improved specs. It’s also likey to stay a similar size (5.2-inch screen) and shape. Although, PhoneArena reports that there might be two size versions, both featuring QHD displays.

Motorola’s CMO Adrienna Hayes, said on Twitter recently that the Motorola will “bring it” when it comes to the next handset’s camera. She also hinted at better manual controls, perhaps taking a leaf out of the LG G4’s book. Camera quality has been a let down for otherwise impressive smartphones made by Motorola, and rank far behind the likes of Samsung and LG.

Motorola makes the best stock Android handsets around (it also might be one of the first devices to run Android M), so expect something impressive when the Moto X 2015 is launched later this year.

Lumia 940Xl

Yes, a Windows phone makes the list. For reasons that I detail extensively here, Microsoft MSFT +0.00% might just make a damn decent smartphone if all goes to plan.

NokiaPowerUser reported that the Lumia 940XL will have the usual stuff under the hood; Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB of RAM, a QHD display and a 20MP camera. Pretty standard stuff. What’s exciting is the extras, which include USB-C support, native pen support, Windows 10 and a load of freebies like Office 365 and Microsoft’s newly acquired productivity apps.

Windows 10 and the productivity apps is the most enticing part of the package (if accurate). The new Windows is real improvement on the previous mobile OS. There’s also the fact that mobile and desktop sync nicely, so notifications on your phone will be accessible on your PC. The pre-loaded productivity apps and free subscriptions to software like Office 365 (or some aspects of it at least) are a welcome incentive to switch back to Windows Phone.

Happy Labor Day to everyone! If you’re lucky enough like me you have today off and are probably going to be cooking out, going to the lake, just resting at home, and/or spending time with family. Here in Austin, The University of Texas looks as though school has not even started yet. Everyone has gone home to enjoy one final weekend before we all have the long stretch of vactionless work until Thanksgiving. To celebrate this day off a lot of us will be cooking some good grub, everyone has go to eat right? For everyone that is working today, I’m sorry, that must suck something fierce. I’m sure everywhere is busier today and having once worked in the service industry I know how hard it is to see everyone on their day off as you have to restock or wait on them hand and foot. Having friends who didn’t work in college, their stories of fun on holidays like this one were always a big tease.

On a different note this will be my last post for a while, my day time job has really kicked up and is requiring more of my time. I will be taking leave from the site for a couple of months but don’t worry I leave in more than capable hands of our other writers and replacement for me.
